In 2010 Conner won a place at the World Championships in Azerbaijan and then in 2011 Fraser made it to the Championships held in Kazakhstan. Team coach Alex Docherty said: “For a club to get a boxer to the worlds is a massive achievement but to then repeat that the following year is just amazing and we are so pleased that the former Prime Minster came to our club to recognise the achievement of these two lads.”
The club now has over 30 boxers training on a regular basis with many competing in local and Scottish championship matches. The MP said that Kelty Boxing Club is now recognised for its ‘ability, professionalism and achievement throughout the country’.
He added: “The club is open to any local people who want to take up the sport and also welcomes people who simply want to get a bit fitter by training and doing the circuits. I think that we can be truly proud that this local club has put Kelty very much on the boxing map and I want to thank the coaches, Alex and Rachel for the massive amount of time and effort they have put in to making this one of the best clubs in the country.”
Mr Brown also met many of the boxers aged from 10 years old to 20 and heard their personal stories of hard work and success. He also saw the gym and his old running machine which he had donated to the club when he left Downing Street for the last time over a year ago. He said: “I met with Alex and Rachel and some the boxers a few years ago when they attended an event in Kirkcaldy and I was so impressed when I talked to the young people. Their focus, commitment and discipline has brought great results for them as individuals and for the club. It has been truly an amazing season with many lads boxing at Scottish, British and then World championship level.
“I am aware of the many local sports groups in Kelty and it is just great that people do give up their time to support young people in positive activities. Whether it is boxing, football, table tennis, bowling, karate and many more sports they are all available through local clubs in the village and I am proud to be associated with Kelty Boxing Club and the many other sports clubs in the village.”
